Getting perfect blinds or curtains begins with correct measurements. This easy guide will help you measure your windows step-by-step, ensuring your window coverings fit just the way you want.
How to Measure for Blinds
1. Inside Mount (blinds fitted inside the window frame)
Width:
Measure the inside width at the top, middle, and bottom of the frame.
→ Use the smallest measurement.
Height:
Measure the inside height on the left, center, and right.
→ Use the shortest measurement.
2. Outside Mount (blinds installed outside or above the frame)
Width:
Measure how wide you want the blinds to cover.
→ Add 3–4 inches on each side for better light control.
Height:
Measure from where you plan to mount the blinds down to the desired end point.
→ Add extra height if mounting above the frame.

How to Measure for Curtains
Width:
Measure the length of your curtain rod.
If you don’t have a rod yet, measure the window and add 8–12 inches on both sides so the curtains can open fully without blocking the window.
For a fuller, more elegant look, the total curtain width should be 2 to 2.5 times the window width.
Length:
Choose where you want the curtains to fall:
Just below the windowsill
Just above the floor
Touching or pooling on the floor
Then measure from the top of the rod to your desired length.
Measuring Tips
Use a metal tape measure for accurate results.
Measure twice to avoid errors.
Watch for any obstacles like handles, radiators, furniture, or trims.
